Despite their relative popularity in the cosmetic surgery world, there is a surprising amount of misinformation about both Botox and Restylane. While it is generally common knowledge that both substances are used to help smooth out the skin, most people don’t know that they are used in two very different ways. Here are a few differences between Botox and Restylane in Chicago.
Botox Relaxes The Skin
Botox is commonly referred to as a “relaxer”, used to smooth over wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movements. For patients who have crow’s feet or lines on their forehead, Botox is the ideal treatment. Botox doesn’t last nearly as long as Restylane, with patients needed to have treatments administered every few months. Botox does teach the skin not to produce wrinkles, helping to prevent future lines from appearing.
Restylane Fills In The Skin
Restylane, on the other hand, is commonly called a “filler” and works by literally filling in folds on the face. Restylane is ideal for wrinkles caused by a loss of tone and volume in the face, commonly due to aging. Unlike Botox, Restylane won’t actively prevent wrinkles from appearing, or reappearing, nor can it be used to treat other health conditions like migraines. However, Restylane lasts much longer than Botox, with patients often waiting up to a hear before needing to receive the treatment again.
Both Are Non-Surgical Procedures
Both Restylane and Botox are non-surgical procedures, meaning they can be completed in a relatively short period of time with very few long term negative effects. Botox may leave the affected area feeling numb for a few hours following the injections, but won’t have any other lasting negative effect. Patients who receive Restylane may find they feel some tenderness and soreness at the injection sites, but again, this won’t last long. This type of pain is easily treated with over the counter pain relievers.
